At its press presentation at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Sony showed the first trailer for its Gran Turismo movie. The brief “sneak peek” video of the motorsport film based on the PlayStation racing game series highlights the on-track action but does little to promote the plot.
The video demonstrates the extent the filmmakers—led by director Neill Blomkamp—went to in order to mimic the appearance of the video games using actual race vehicles. The gameplay experience is repeated in cockpit cameras and a startlingly faithful replication of the games’ high, slanted chase camera, while wheeling drone shots harken back to GT’s trailers and replay modes.
In the trailer, the cast also makes an appearance and addresses the viewer directly to promote the immersive quality the racing sequences will have in theaters. Orlando Bloom claims, “This movie is meant for the cinema,” promising “body-vibrating sound… The audience will experience every shock, every thrill of this racing at 200 miles per hour.”
The movie boasts a stellar cast that includes Orlando Bloom, David Harbour, Darren Barnet, and Geri Halliwell Horner.
