There will soon be a new Mafia game. The revelation was made in a blog post honoring the 20th anniversary of the Mafia franchise by the series’ publisher, 2K Games, and Hanger 13, the company behind Mafia III and Mafia: Definitive Edition.
I’m glad to reveal we’ve begun development on a whole new Mafia project. We’re incredibly happy to continue working on this cherished series and to amuse our players with new storylines, even though it’s a few years away and we can’t say anything else just now.

The studio withheld additional information about the project. Mafia: Definitive Edition, a recreation of the franchise’s first 2002 installment, was its most recent release. Since the studio’s work on Mafia III was finished in 2016, additional rounds of layoffs have taken place at Hanger 13, according to a Kotaku article from earlier this year. The most recent came in May when it was claimed that 2K had canceled a game that Hanger 13 had been developing for some time and that the publisher had invested $50 million on. In a different article the same month, Kotaku revealed that the company was also working on a Mafia prequel that was based on Unreal Engine 5 and was set in Italy.
Additionally, 2K said that it will be giving gratis the first game on Steam from September 1 through September 5 if you wanted to catch up on the series or play it for the first time. Definitive Edition is also on sale through September 8th.
