Today HBO will be premiering The Last of Us, a television series based on the popular video game series created by Naughty Dog. The plot revolves around Joel and Ellie’s post-apocalyptic cross-country journey as they struggle to survive in a world devastated by a mutated strain of the Cordyceps fungus that has caused a widespread epidemic that turns people into raving monsters.
The series is set twenty years after the destruction of contemporary civilisation. Joel, a grizzled survivor, is recruited to smuggle Ellie, a 14-year-old girl, out of a harsh quarantine zone. As they both must travel across the United States and rely on one another for survival, what begins as a simple task quickly turns into a terrible, devastating trip.
Joel and Ellie will be portrayed by Pedro Pascal (The Mandalorian, Wonder Woman 1984) and Bella Ramsey (Game of Thrones, His Dark Materials).
Gabriel Luna (True Detective), Merle Dandridge (The Last of Us video games, The Flight Attendant), and Anna Torv (Fringe) are also joining the cast as Tommy, Joel’s younger brother and a former soldier; Marlene, the resistance leader; and Tess, a smuggler and fellow grizzled survivor.
