Celebrity spam has taken over Facebook feeds

On Wednesday, hundreds of thousands of Facebook users experienced problems with their news feeds as a bug seemed to push updates to celebrity fan pages and groups to the top of timelines.

Users reported issues on the outage monitoring website Downdetector between 07:00 and 09:00 BST.

Many responded to the bug by making fun of Facebook with memes.

The parent company of Facebook, Meta, expressed regret “for any inconvenience” and declared the problem to be addressed.

An official told the BBC, “A configuration update earlier today resulted in some customers experiencing issues with their Facebook feed. For everyone who was impacted, the problem was soon fixed.”

Facebook Feed Changes

The problems started after Meta last month announced new updates to Facebook feeds.

These gave users on Facebook’s mobile iOS and Android apps more ways to customize feeds in a separate tab.

Facebook and Instagram adjustments made to help Meta compete with TikTok and its popularity with short-form videos have drawn criticism.

Users now have more control over the stuff they may view and find thanks to Facebook’s new news feed, which enables users to construct reels from the site’s homepage.
